Tell us about your career: Before I decided to pursue a career as a driver, I worked in the IT industry which included roles at Royal & Sun Alliance and IBM Systems. I’d always enjoyed driving and following redundancy, I took the opportunity to put myself through driver training. Once I’d got my licence, I initially worked as an agency driver and then for Kingsmill and, after a couple of years, I joined the team at Boughey where I enjoyed 12 years on-the-road.
I really enjoyed driving. The company continually invests in new, top-notch fleet; vehicles are well-maintained and drivers are not pressurised by the Transport Team.
Unfortunately, I had to cease driving on medical grounds a year ago but, having been off work for a few months, I was extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to join the Compliance Team to support our team of drivers. I am very grateful for all the support I received from the company.
Current role: My responsibilities include assessing potential new drivers and overseeing their induction when they start with the company. I also get involved with the legal side of driving by managing any infringements or collisions. There is never a dull moment in my job and there is such a variety of work to get involved in.
My experience of working as a driver for so long means that I can relate to drivers’ challenges and I strive to support them as much as I can. I am also able to pass on advice having spent so long behind-the-wheel myself.
What do you like most about working here?: The investment in good fleet and maintenance really puts drivers’ minds at ease. It’s a great environment to work in and there’s so many nice people who work across the company. I have found the transition from being a driver to working in the office very easy because of the team of people here.
Why should someone come and work here?: I honestly believe that drivers won’t find a better and more supportive place to work. Drivers are left to get on with their work without interference and there is no pressure. Drivers are very well-supported here.
