Why Moving More Matters

Staying active isn’t just about fitness, it’s about feeling better day to day, especially if your work involves long hours sitting or standing still. Small, regular bursts of movement can make a big difference to your health, energy and mood.

The NHS recommends:

  • 150 minutes of moderate activity each week (like brisk walking, cycling, or light aerobics)
    or
  • 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week (like running, circuit training, or fast swimming)
  • Plus: muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week (weights, resistance bands, or bodyweight exercises such as squats and push-ups).

Even a little extra movement can bring noticeable improvements:

  • Better sleep – helps you unwind and recover after long or late shifts.
  • Improved mental health – reduces stress, lifts mood, and supports resilience.
  • Lower risk of illness – helps prevent heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and other conditions.
  • More energy – staying active makes everyday tasks feel easier and less tiring.

If you don’t have a big block of free time, break activity into smaller chunks:

  • A 10-minute walk before or after your shift.
  • Stretching during breaks to loosen up muscles.
  • Quick bodyweight workouts at home when it suits you.

Every bit counts, moving more helps you feel stronger, healthier, and more energised, whatever your role at Boughey.
