Paul Tubb

Driver

Years worked with the company: 2

Career background:  My driving career spans 40 years which I started at the age of 17.  My dad was a driver and I followed him into the industry.  I worked for lots of different businesses across the Midlands driving vans including for TNT and UPS and, at the age of 40, I decided to train for my Class 1 licence which I achieved 18 years ago.

A year after I gained my Class 1 licence, I had a motorcycle accident which resulted in me having a hip replacement and amputation of my lower left limb.  Because of recovery and rehabilitation, including being bed-bound for six months, it took me five years to get back on-the-road but I was determined to do it.

I worked for Owens of Droitwich for eight years, followed by some agency work and then joined Boughey in January 2020.

Tell us about driving with Boughey:  I had my interview at 5.00am on a Tuesday morning and was out driving by the following morning.  I work as a tramper starting on a Monday morning and returning on Friday evening.  My home is in Worcester so I travel to site on Sunday, ready to start work early on Monday.

What do you like most about working here?:  Boughey feels like a family-run business. Driving with the company is a very secure job – working within the food industry, the company is always busy and there is a continuous and steady flow of work.

The company is very supportive and you get recognised for what you do.  A thank you goes a long way.

RHA Hero Award:  In 2021, Paul was officially named as a Road Haulage Association Hero.  The RHA programme recognises drivers who go the extra mile in their work. Paul was nominated by the company’s Compliance Team who said:

“Paul Tubb makes a fantastic contribution to our industry. He overcomes adversity every single day coping with his prosthetic leg, but he always wears a smile and displays a fantastic positive attitude. He has a can-do attitude to his work and nothing is too much trouble for Paul.

He sets a real example to all of us and portrays the company in a positive way to each of our customers – a true ambassador for Boughey Distribution. The professionalism Paul displays is exemplary.

Not only is Paul a great colleague; he also presents an inspiring story for our industry and, we are sure, could encourage others with similar disabilities to pursue a career in driving.”
