Tell us about your career with Boughey: I moved to the UK with my family in September 2019. Previously, I lived in Italy for ten years and worked for a wealthy family in Lake Garda where I supported them with the running of their huge mansion. My husband and I decided to move to the England for a change of lifestyle and to be in a good place for our son to grow up.
After working for B&M for eight months, I joined the company in May 2020 as a Warehouse Operative in the Goods-in area. It was the perfect place to learn about the business as I had to deal with many challenges each day and I had direct contact with customers too. I had a great team of people around me who supported me and helped me to learn from the minute I started.
My Manager, Mike Jepson, was very supportive and taught me to believe in myself and my ability. He saw my potential and really encouraged me to progress. When my Team Leader was away one day, Mike gave me the opportunity to step into the role and to give it a go. He said, ‘come on, let’s see if you survive’ and I did.
After 15 months in my Goods-in role, the company was looking to recruit a Warehouse Team Leader and my Team Leader and my husband encouraged me to apply for the job. Luckily, I was successful and started my new role in August 2021.
Current role: Working on a 4-on 4-off shift pattern, I lead a team of Warehouse Operatives. It was a big change for me, but I have been so lucky to have people willing to help me, to share their knowledge and support me with challenges – they are a great team. I am the only woman in the team and I was received so well by everyone, they were all so kind and open.
My husband is also a Team Leader, working on the opposite shift pattern to me, and this allows one of us to always be there for our son. We can both spend time with him and we don’t have to worry about him being looked after during school holidays.
What do you like most about working here?: The people I work with and I really enjoy the challenge of learning new things. Every day there is something new to learn and this makes me want to push myself and learn more and more.
I have been given the opportunity to prove myself and to show myself that I can do things that I thought I couldn’t do. I hope to be able to demonstrate to my son that if you want something, you can make it happen.
Why should someone come and work here?: If you want to learn new things and progress, this is the place to be. Working here has been an unbelievable journey for me. I never expected to get to where I am now, but if you have people who believe in you and see your potential and who tell you to ‘go for it’, this is the best thing. I feel lucky to have had two awesome managers, Mike Jepson, and my current manager, Dave Vernon, who have both supported me so much.
