Ian Ledward

Driver

Years worked with the company: 16

Tell us about your role: I started driving 32 years ago when I was 21. My grandad and my dad were both drivers and so is my brother. As a youngster, I used to spend all my holidays going out with my Dad in his lorry and he taught me everything I know about driving.

Fourteen years ago, I joined Boughey and I’ve always worked days making short or medium distance journeys. For the last six years, I have worked on our contract with Typhoo Tea making daily journeys back and forth to their factory in Moreton on the Wirral. My brother also works on the same contract on nights so between us we keep things moving right around the clock.

About six years ago, I had a heart attack and had to undergo surgery which meant I was off work for seven months. When I returned to work, I couldn’t have wished for a more caring and supportive employer. I came back on a phased basis, initially working three days a week and the team in the traffic office were always checking if I was ok and they helped manage my workload around my recovery. They also worked my schedule around any follow-up hospital appointments I had to attend.

What do you like most about working here? I have worked for a number of companies over the years, but this is the best company I’ve worked for. It’s a really professional company and the whole fleet is top-notch and has the best of everything. There is a great duty of care culture throughout the business.

Safety is so important when you’re a driver and everything is just right here. If defects are reported they get sorted quickly and vehicles are always kept well maintained by our workshop.

The working conditions are very good and the Transport Department are great. If you have any personal issues, they support you and you are left alone to get on with your work. Because of my regular work on one contract, I often have direct contact with the customer too.

I know there are other driving jobs out there but in many places you’re just a number and that definitely isn’t the case here. I have no intention of leaving here.
