Safer Together: Site Safety This Winter

Staying safe on site this winter

Winter weather doesn’t just affect the roads; it can also create extra risks across our sites. From icy yards to darker mornings, we all need to stay alert and follow safe practices to protect ourselves and our colleagues.

Good footwear is essential for staying safe, both on site and in your own time. During the winter months, wet and icy conditions can make surfaces slippery, increasing the risk of slips, trips, and falls. That’s why it’s important to check the tread on your safety shoes regularly. Worn soles mean less grip, especially on smooth or icy ground. If your tread is wearing down, it’s time to request a replacement.

Safety boots also offer better protection and stability than lighter shoes in winter conditions. Their stronger tread and ankle support make them a safer choice for moving around site or navigating snow and ice outdoors.

It’s also a good idea to keep a pair of safety boots and a hi-vis in your car. If you ever break down or need to walk in the dark, you’ll be prepared, with footwear that grips the ground and clothing that keeps you visible to other road users.

Small steps like these help you stay safe, seen, and steady on your feet, wherever winter takes you.

Our MHE Golden Rules still apply, but in winter conditions, they matter more than ever:

  • Adjust your speed – Surfaces can be slippery, so slow down and stay in control.
  • No tailgating – Always leave enough space for braking; stopping distances increase in wet or icy conditions.
  • 360° awareness – Stay alert, look all around you, and keep your lights on during darker mornings and evenings.

  • Stick to designated walkways – never take shortcuts across traffic routes.
  • Wear your hi-vis at all times –  it’s vital for being seen in darker mornings and evenings.

Let’s look out for each other

By slowing down, staying visible, and reporting hazards, we can all help keep our sites safe through the winter months.
