Road Safety

Winter brings darker nights, icy roads and unpredictable conditions, all of which make travelling to and from work or driving professionally, more challenging. For our safer for winter campaign, we’re giving you some advice and tip to keep safe on the roads, for both colleagues commuting and our drivers.

Here are some practical tips and reminders to help everyone stay safe on the roads this winter.

Winter Car Check Guide

Before setting off, take a few minutes to make sure your vehicle is ready for the road:

  • Fuel – Always keep your tank topped up.
  • Tyre pressure and tread – Check regularly to ensure grip on icy surfaces.
  • Wipers and lights – Make sure they’re clean and working properly.
  • Screenwash – Use a winter-strength solution to prevent freezing.

Plan Ahead

  • Leave enough time in the morning to fully defrost your vehicle, don’t drive with just a small patch cleared.
  • Allow extra travel time so you don’t feel pressured to rush.
  • Always adjust your speed and braking distance to match the conditions.

Essentials to Keep in Your Car

Carrying a small emergency kit can make a big difference if you get stuck in traffic or face delays:

  • Torch and spare batteries
  • Phone charger or power bank
  • Blanket, gloves, and warm clothing
  • Ice scraper and de-icer
  • Bottle of water and some snacks
Driving in Winter: Top Tips

  • Keep a safe distance – at least double in wet weather and up to 10 times in icy conditions.
  • Watch out for black ice, especially in shaded areas, bridges and country roads.
