We recently spoke to our Nights Warehouse Manager, David Leggett, asking him questions about his experiences Managing the night shift!
Can you tell us about your background and how you became a night shift warehouse manager?
My warehouse experience began back in 1984 when I started with WH Smith wholesale. I was with them for 9 years and left as a warehouse manager. I then moved to Morrisons at the Winsford store as the warehouse manager on late shifts, where I stayed for 2 years before transitioning to the new Gadbrook Distribution Centre as the goods-in manager. I managed a team of 70 staff with a daily intake of around 3500 pallets and ran that department for 10 years. In 2004, I helped Boughey with some of their inbound issues, leading to a job offer with their goods handling team in 2005. I ran the GHT team on late shifts for over 3 years, and when the Wardle site expanded, I moved over as the night manager. I have now been managing the night shift for nearly 17 years.
What motivated you to take on the night shift role, and how long have you been in this position?
The motivation to take on the night shift role came from the opportunity to lead and manage in a quieter environment where I could implement improvements and better manage the warehouse operations. I’ve been in this position for nearly 17 years, and it has allowed me to address unique challenges and contribute significantly to the efficiency of our operations.
What are the main differences between managing a warehouse during the day versus at night?
Managing a warehouse at night is quite different from the day shift. The night shift requires juggling various tasks to ensure that all the warehouses operate at a similar level to support the needs of the goods handling team. With fewer colleagues and resources compared to the day shift, it’s crucial to move the colleagues we have continuously to meet demands. Night shifts also involve more issues that need resolution outside regular office hours, which can sometimes feel like working both days and nights.
Can you describe a typical night shift in the warehouse?
A typical night shift starts with a briefing to review goals and address any issues from the previous shift. We then conduct a walkthrough to ensure everything is in order before operations begin. The shift involves overseeing inventory management, coordinating with the team, and addressing any issues that arise. We also prepare for the transition to the day shift, ensuring everything is set up for a smooth handover.
What unique challenges do you face during the night shift that are less common during the day?
Unique challenges during the night shift include maintaining high energy and motivation levels among the team, as well as dealing with fewer resources and support. Coordinating with other departments can also be more challenging due to reduced overlap with daytime colleagues Additionally, the night shift can disrupt the body’s circadian rhythm, making it essential to manage both colleagues and personal health carefully.
How do you ensure effective communication and coordination with the day shift team?
Effective communication with the day shift team is ensured through detailed shift reports and a clear handover process. Regular meetings with day shift managers help discuss ongoing issues and updates, maintaining continuity and alignment with the warehouse’s goals and operations.
What strategies do you use to keep your team motivated and productive during the night?
To keep the team motivated, I focus on creating a positive work environment with regular breaks and opportunities for feedback. I also set clear goals and recognise achievements to keep morale high. Educating colleagues on managing night shift challenges and providing professional development opportunities helps keep the team engaged and productive.
How do you handle safety and security concerns during the night shift?
Safety and security are addressed through rigorous protocols and regular safety drills. We use surveillance systems to monitor the facility and ensure that all security measures are in place. Being vigilant and promptly addressing safety concerns is crucial to prevent incidents.
What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of working the night shift?
Advantages include fewer distractions and interruptions, which can lead to more focused work and potentially higher productivity. Additionally, night shifts often come with higher pay rates. However, disadvantages include the disruption of personal schedules and social life, as well as the potential negative impact on mood and energy levels due to the lack of natural light.
Can you share a memorable experience or story from your time working the night shift?
One memorable experience involves our work with Issac Harris, a colleague with autism. He had previously struggled with support needs at another company, but when he joined us at Boughey, we provided extra mentoring and educated the team on how to support him. Issac’s enthusiasm and positive attitude have made him a beloved member of the night shift team. His success story is a testament to our commitment to inclusivity and support, and it has been a rewarding experience for everyone involved.
