Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. As the year comes to an end, we have made plenty of progress and overcome our challenges. We recently sat down with our ESGQ Manager, Sarah Hall, to discuss the key milestones, lessons and ambitions that shaped our ESG journey in 2024. From achieving B Corp certification to expanding our use of electric vehicles, this interview is an insight into how we’re driving meaningful change while paving the way for a more sustainable future. Read on to discover how we’re making a difference and what’s next on our journey toward net zero.
Can you share some of the key sustainability initiatives that were successful in 2024?
Achieving B Corp certification underlined our dedication to balancing profit with social and environmental responsibility. This milestone reflects our improvements across governance, worker well-being, community impact, and environmental awareness.
We also participated in the Electric Freightways programme, expanding our use of electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs).
What are the biggest challenges Boughey has faced this year in improving its ESG metrics?
Meeting the growing demand for transparent ESG metrics and disclosures has been an obstacle. Investors and stakeholders are increasingly looking for detailed data, but the lack of standardised frameworks has made it harder to align Boughey’s ESG initiatives with broader expectations.
While we have embraced innovations like energy-efficient practices and sustainable logistics, integrating these technologies at scale is resource-intensive and requires overcoming legacy operational hurdles.
How have we measured the success of our environmental and sustainability efforts this year?
The company has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2040 and measures progress through specific areas such as carbon footprint reduction.
Boughey has monitored fuel efficiency improvements through driver behaviour management systems.
Can you highlight any specific accomplishments or milestones we’ve achieved this year in terms of sustainability?
Boughey successfully earned B Corp certification, a rigorous standard assessing its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices.
How has the company engaged colleagues or community partners in our sustainability initiatives?
- Collaboration with the Better Business Network: We joined this community of purpose-driven businesses focused on social and environmental improvements. This partnership connects Boughey with resources and workshops to enhance its sustainability efforts and aligns with its B Corp ambitions.
- Through our collaboration with FareShare, we redistribute surplus food to frontline charities and community groups. This initiative not only reduces food waste but also supports vulnerable populations, creating a dual social and environmental impact.
- Being a finalist in the Sustainability Champion category at the Everywoman’s Transport and Logistics National Awards demonstrated our efforts in driving sustainability initiatives and mentoring others on sustainable practices.
Looking ahead, what are our next priorities for improving sustainability and ESG performance in 2025 and beyond?
- Further integrating B Corp principles.
- Expanding eco-friendly logistics.
- Community and workforce engagement.
Personally, why is sustainability important to you?
Sustainability is deeply important to me for a number of reasons. I see sustainability as a way to create meaningful impact by reducing harm to the environment and fostering social responsibility. Sustainability is not just a business necessity but also a moral imperative to ensure long-term benefits for communities and the planet.
